* The check digit is used to verify the accuracy of the VIN transcription.  The check digit is calculated after all other characters of the VIN have been determined.  The formula for creating the check digit is based on various variables such as VIN position, Sample VIN, assigned value code, weight code, and multiply assigned value times weight factors.  The values are added and divided by 11.  The remainder is the check digit value.  The check digit value is always a number 0 - 9 or the letter "X" if the remainder equals 10.  Thus, the calculation for the check digit is complex and is designed to prevent identical VIN for any two vehicles within a 30 year period.

The full vehicle frame number is identified from information on the name plate.  The first four characters of the model identification code plus the sequential production sequence number of the VIN code equal the vehicle frame number.  Using the above name plate, RA64 - 123456 equals the vehicle frame number for this vehicle example.  A vehicle can be further identified pursuant to engineering revisions during the production of the vehicle.  For example, the vehicle portrayed in the above name plate was produced after engineering revision #1185.
